The Story of Aiyyaa

Meenakshi's Dream World

The movie revolves around Meenakshi Deshpande (Rani Mukerji), a librarian who lives in a dream world of her own. She loves watching masala films and imagines herself as the heroine in various situations. She also has a keen sense of smell and gets attracted to different fragrances. She is unhappy with her mundane life and wishes for some excitement and romance.

Surya's Mysterious Charm

One day, she sees a man named Surya (Prithviraj Sukumaran), an art student who works on a Tamil film set. She is instantly smitten by his looks and his scent, which reminds her of jasmine flowers. She follows him around and tries to get his attention, but he seems oblivious to her presence. She also learns that he is deaf and mute, which adds to his mysterious appeal. She starts calling him "Mr. Artist" and fantasizes about him in various film songs.

The Family Drama

Meanwhile, Meenakshi has to deal with her crazy family, who are always creating some chaos or the other. Her father (Satish Alekar) is a retired art teacher who collects various junk items and makes sculptures out of them. Her mother (Nirmiti Sawant) is a loud and bossy woman who is obsessed with finding a suitable groom for Meenakshi. Her grandmother (Jyoti Subhash) is a wheelchair-bound old lady who watches TV all day and makes sarcastic comments. Her brother (Amey Wagh) is a supportive and sensible person who helps Meenakshi with her problems.

One day, Meenakshi's parents arrange a meeting with a prospective groom named Madan Kulkarni (Subodh Bhave), who is a boring and conventional engineer. Meenakshi is not interested in him, but agrees to meet him out of respect for her parents. She also hopes that Surya will notice her and propose to her before the wedding date is fixed.

The Climax

On the day of the engagement, Meenakshi decides to elope with Surya, who has finally acknowledged her feelings and given her a painting of her face. She leaves a note for her family and runs away with him on his bike. However, they are chased by Madan and his relatives, who are angry and insulted by Meenakshi's actions. They also encounter Surya's father (Pradeep Kabra), who is a violent and abusive man who hates his son for being deaf and mute.

After a series of comic and dramatic events, Meenakshi and Surya manage to escape from their pursuers and reach a temple, where they exchange garlands and get engaged. Meenakshi's family also arrives there and accepts their relationship, after seeing how much they love each other. The movie ends with Meenakshi and Surya dancing happily in the rain.
