While there are various methods to help with depression, recent research has shown that providing your brain and body with proper nutrients is a way to prevent and treat depression.


A lack of nutrition can lead to an imbalance in the brain chemicals that control mood, energy, and appetite. This means that not getting enough of the right nutrients can actually cause or worsen depression symptoms.


So how do you make sure you’re eating right? Here are some key nutrients to focus on:


-Folate: This B vitamin is important for the proper function of neurotransmitters, which are responsible for sending messages between nerve cells. A folate deficiency has been linked to depression. Good sources of folate include leafy green vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds.


-Omega-3 fatty acids: These healthy fats play a role in brain development and function. A vitamin B6 deficiency has been linked to depression. Good sources of vitamin B6 include poultry, fish, potatoes, starchy vegetables, and non-citrus fruits.


-Vitamin D: This nutrient is important for bone health, but it also plays a role in brain function. A vitamin D deficiency has been linked to an increased risk of depression. Good sources of vitamin D include fatty fish, mushrooms, eggs, and fortified foods like milk and cereal.
